What is the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)?
The Rehabilitation Council of India is a statutory body established under the Rehabilitation Council of India Act, 1992. It regulates and standardises training for rehabilitation professionals in India — including speech-language pathologists, audiologists, special educators, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and others. RCI registration (the CRR number) is the legal minimum standard for practising as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist in India. Practising without RCI registration is illegal under the Act.
What RCI registration requires
To obtain RCI registration, a speech-language pathologist must complete a recognised degree programme (typically a Bachelor's in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, or BASLP, from an RCI-approved institution), pass the national licensing requirement, and maintain their registration through continuing education. The CRR (Central Rehabilitation Register) number is assigned upon successful registration. Audiologists follow a similar pathway. RCI registration is renewed periodically and can be verified on the RCI website using the CRR number — which all registered professionals should be willing to share.
Why RCI registration matters for families
The Indian speech therapy and audiology space has a significant proportion of unqualified practitioners. Some offer sessions without any formal qualification; others have qualifications from unrecognised programmes. Without RCI registration, there is no baseline guarantee that a practitioner has the training to conduct assessments, interpret results, or deliver evidence-based therapy. For a family investing in months of sessions, this matters enormously. Asking for a CRR number is the simplest and most important quality check available.
Beyond registration: what specialist experience looks like
RCI registration is a necessary but not sufficient quality indicator. Within speech-language pathology and audiology, there are significant sub-specialisations: fluency (stammering), autism communication and AAC, voice disorders, swallowing, cochlear implant rehabilitation, paediatric audiology, and neuro-speech rehabilitation. A generalist SLP with RCI registration may not have the specialist experience to manage complex stammering, advanced AAC, or post-stroke aphasia effectively. When seeking care for a specific condition, ask specifically about experience with that condition — not just general RCI registration.
How to verify an RCI number
RCI maintains a publicly searchable register at rciindia.org. You can verify any CRR number by entering it in the search. Legitimate practitioners are always willing to share their CRR number upfront. At Neurova, all specialists' CRR numbers are listed on their profiles. We operate under NeurodiverseClinics, a clinic registered with the Government of India — adding a further layer of institutional accountability to individual RCI registration.

Can I find speech therapists without RCI registration in India?+
Yes — they exist, often offering lower prices. But practising without RCI registration is illegal under the Rehabilitation Council of India Act, and there is no baseline quality guarantee. For clinical care that affects your child's development or your own recovery, RCI registration is a non-negotiable minimum.
Is RCI registration the same as a professional degree?+
RCI registration requires a qualifying degree, but having a degree doesn't automatically confer registration. Registration requires active application, approval by RCI, and maintenance through continuing education. Always ask for the CRR number, not just the degree.
What is the difference between a speech therapist and a speech-language pathologist?+
In India, these terms are often used interchangeably in common usage. The formal professional title for RCI-registered practitioners is 'Speech-Language Pathologist' (SLP). 'Speech therapist' is common in everyday language but has no specific legal protection or credential requirement — anyone can call themselves a speech therapist. 'Speech-Language Pathologist' with RCI registration is the protected, qualified title.
