Common questions
Questions families ask us first.
How early should we start?+
As soon as you are concerned. Early assessment is always better than passive waiting. The 12–24 month window is particularly important for language development.
Does my child need to be in the room?+
For young children, we often begin with a parent consultation — you describe what you observe and we guide you on home activities while assessment is planned.
How do I know if it's a speech delay or a hearing problem?+
A speech and language assessment and a hearing screen together answer this question. Some children with speech delays have an underlying hearing issue that went undetected — both need to be ruled out in the same triage.
My child is bilingual — does that cause speech delay?+
No. Bilingualism does not cause speech delay. A bilingual child should meet language milestones across both languages combined. If they're behind in both, that warrants an assessment — not a 'wait and see.'
What does a speech and language assessment actually involve?+
A structured observation of your child's vocabulary, sentence structure, speech clarity, and comprehension — combined with a parent interview about milestones and daily communication. We share a written report with specific goals after.
